Guy Strong
Guy strong, the Administrative Director of the Clark County Schools in Winchester, Kentucky was born on June 15, 1930 to Ed and Joanna Strong of Irvine. He is married to the former Aleen Noland of Irvine (49 years) and they have three children; Mina Seymour, Nancy Buffkin and Marla Strong. He has one sister, Mary Jo Gould and one brother, Charles “Speck” Strong (deceased).
Guy graduated from Irvine High School in 1948. At Irvine, in addition to being an honor student, he played basketball, football and baseball under the guidance of Coach Joe Ohr. He was captain of the Basketball Team in 1946-47, captain of the Baseball Team in 1947-48 and was named to the Kentucky All-State Basketball Team after the 1947-48 season. He was the quarterback for the Irvine High School Football Team and a pitcher for the baseball team.
After he graduated from Irvine High School, Guy enrolled at the University of Kentucky as a student and played basketball on a scholarship for the legendary Adolph Rupp form 1948-1951. Guy also played baseball while attending UK. He was a member of two SEC Championship Basketball Teams and one NCAA Championship Team 1950-51. He then transferred to Eastern Kentucky State College (EKU) and played basketball for another legendary coach, Paul McBrayer. He was member of the OVC Championship Basketball Team in 1954-55. He also played baseball while at Eastern.
While Guy has spent most of his career as a teacher and administrator in the public schools of Kentucky, he is best known as one of the most successful basketball coaches who ever worked at either the high school or college/university level. However, even though hi is best known for coaching successes, his many friends know that Guy’s passion as an educator was not one- dimensional. He was interested first and foremost in the personal lives of each young person that he taught, whether on the court or in the classroom. Academics, dedication, honest and integrity was expected above all else with his students and players.
Guy Strong has coached basketball and football at numerous schools including: Madison High School, Male High School, Virginia Tech University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Eastern Kentucky University, Oklahoma State University and George Rogers Clark High School. He has served as assistant principal and principal at George Rogers Clark High School and most recently as Administrative Director of the Clark County Schools. He has been a member and officer of numerous professional organizations including but not limited to: The Kentucky and the National Associations of Secondary School Principals, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Kentucky and National High School Coaches Associations, K-Men’s Association and the EKU Alumni Association. He is a member of the Central Baptist Church in Winchester.
Honors and awards that Guy has received are numerous and extremely prestigious. The more notable include: The national Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, 1996; the Distinguished Alumni Award, EKU, 1975; the EKU hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993; the Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame, 1993.
