JOSEPH PROCTOR WAS BORN IN ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA IN 1754. HE WAS THE SECOND CHILD OF TEN CHILDREN, BORN TO NICHOLAS AND NANNIE SMITH PROCTOR .
JOSEPH MARRIED POLLY HORN IN 1777 IN FINCASTLE CO. VIRGINIA, POLLY WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ARRON CHRISTOPHER & ELIZABETH HORN, PROGENITOR OF THE HORN FAMILIES OF ESTILL CO. KY.
JOSEPH ENLISTED IN EARLY 1777, ON THE HOLSTIN RIVER, IN WHAT IS NOW WASHINGTON CO. VIRGINIA. HE SERVED IN CAPTAIN AARON LEWIS'S COMPANY OF THE VIRGINIA MILITIA TO PROTECT THE SETTLEMENTS AGAINST THE CHEROKEE INDIANS.
JOSEPH SERVED IN THE MILITIA THROUGHOUT 1777 AND IN EARLY 1778, HE ENLISTED IN CAPTAIN CORNELIUS RIDDLE'S, VIRGINIA STATE TROOPS,UNDER THE COMMAND OF COLONEL BENJAMIN LOGAN.
THEY ARRIVED AT FORT BOONESBOROUGH IN APRIL OF 1778, WHERE HE SERVED AS A SOLDIER IN THE FORT AND INDIAN SPY OR SCOUT.
DURING THIS TIME HE MADE NUMEROUS TRIPS TO WHAT IS NOW ESTILL CO. KY.
JOSEPH PROCTOR WAS AT FORT BOONESBOROUGH DURING THE GREAT SIEGE IN SEPTEMBER OF 1778 AND HELPED DEFEND THE FORT AGAINST THE FIVE HUNDRED MAN ARMY OF INDIANS AND BRITISH SOLDIERS. HE ALSO WAS AT THE BATTLE OF LITTLE MOUNTAIN, IN MONTGOMERY CO. KY, WHERE CAPTAIN JAMES ESTILL [ESTILL CO. WAS NAMED AFTER CAPT. JAMES ESTILL] WAS KILLED. JOSEPH PROCTOR KILLED THE INDIAN WARRIOR WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ESTILL AND HELPED THE REMAINING SOLDIERS OF THE BATTLE TO ESCAPE . ONE OF THESE SOLDIERS WAS COL. WILLIAM IRVINE , FOR WHOM THE CITY OF IRVINE, KY IS NAMED.
JOSEPH PROCTOR'S CONDUCT AFTER THE BATTLE HAS ALWAYS, WITH THOSE ACQUAINTED WITH IT, ELICITED THE WARMEST COMMENDATIONS. HE BROUGHT OFF THE FIELD OF BATTLE, AND MOST OF THE WAY TO FORT BOONESBOROUGH, A DISTANCE OF FORTY MILES, ON HIS BACK, HIS BADLY WOUNDED FRIEND, COL. WILLIAM IRVINE.
JOSEPH PROCTOR JOINED THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH AT FORT BOONESBOROUGH IN THE YEAR OF 1787, IN MADISON CO. KY, UNDER THE PREACHING OF THE REV. JAMES HAWKES AND WAS LATER ORDAINED, IN 1809, BY THE BISHOP FRANCIS ASBURY.
JOSEPH PROCTOR ESTABLISHED THE FIRST :METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN ESTILL CO. KY IN 1809. THIS LITTLE LOG CHURCH WAS KNOWN AS KIMBRELL CHAPEL. HE ESTABLISHED A SECOND CHURCH ON WHITE OAK CREEK KNOWN AS PROCTOR'S CHAPEL. THIS CHURCH TODAY IS KNOWN AS THE WHITE OAK CHURCH OF GOD. HE ALSO STARTED THE PROVIDENCE CHAPEL, NEAR FOXTOWN, IN MADISON CO. KY.
THE REV. PROCTOR'S GREATEST AND MOST FAR REACHING MINISTRY WAS PROBABLY ACCOMPLISHED AT THE COUNTY SEAT, AFTER THE FIRST COURTHOUSE WAS BUILT, AND UNTIL HIS DEATH, HE HELD WEEKLY PRAYER MEETINGS IN THE COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE.
JOSEPH PROCTOR WAS DESCRIBED, BY THOSE WHO KNEW HIM, AS A KIND, HOSPITABLE, GENTLE, GOOD AND HUMBLE MAN. HE PREACHED THE GOSPEL IN ESTILL COUNTY FOR MORE THAN A HALF-CENTURY. HE PERFORMED NUMEROUS MARRIAGES, AS SEEN BY THE MARRIAGE RECORDS OF THE COUNTY.
JOSEPH'S EARTHLY LIFE ENDED, DEC.2, 1844, IN HIS NINETIETH YEAR. HE WAS BURIED WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS, WITH MORE THAN A THOUSAND CITIZENS AND FRIENDS ATTENDING THE SERVICE. HE WAS LAID TO REST BESIDE HIS BELOVED WIFE, POLLY, WHO HAD PRECEDED HIM IN DEATH BY SIX MONTHS.
THEY BOTH ARE BURIED IN THE OLD METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY, OFF MAIN STREET, IN IRVINE, KY.
THE ESTILL COUNTY COURT RECORDS OF OCT. 17, 1853, SHOWS THAT THE COURT PAID SIXTY DOLLARS FOR GRAVESTONES FOR JOSEPH AND POLLY. NO MARKER CAN BE FOUND TODAY.
