Kathryn Cundiff Carter
Kathryn Cundiff Carter was born in Russellville in Logan County and is the daughter of the late William Robert Cundiff and Belle Johnstone Cundiff. Kathryn married the late Ollie Gordon Carter and had one brother, Robert Cundiff .
Around the age of five, Mrs. Carter made her first trip to Estill County by train. Upon reaching the age of six she enrolled in Irvine Elementary in which she attended for three years until she enrolled in a private schools established by Mamie West. Around this time Irvine Elementary caught fire and burned to the ground. When the new building was completed Miss West’s school was closed due to the need of teachers to fill positions at the new school. Thus she attended Irvine Elementary until the eighth grade.
At this time her family moved to Lexington so her brother could attend UK. They lived in Lexington for two years until moving back to Irvine so they could spend more time with their father who was working on the L&N Railroad. At this time she enrolled and graduated from Estill County High School.
Her college education began at EKU from which she graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Mrs. Mamie Scott gave Kathryn her first job as a teacher at the Ivory Hill School. She continued working in the Estill County School system until she was offered a position with the State Department of Welfare.
In 1947 Kathryn married O.G. Carter a local businessman and railroad employee. During this time she resumed her employment with the Kentucky Department of Child Welfare. In this position she became very instrumental in helping the county get a Head Start program and Health Department setup and established. She was also very instrumental in setting up a historic marker program for the county.
After the passing of her father in 1966, her mother came to live with her and O.G.. With both her mother and husband being in poor health, she resigned her position with the state Department of Child Welfare. They both passed away in 1973, one month a part. In order to keep occupied, she returned to teaching at the Estill County Middle School.
During her retirement she enjoyed travelling making two trips to Europe and Alaska and covered the lower 48 states many times, as well as Nassau in the Bahamas.
