Lula B. Snowden
Lula Snowden was born on February 1, 1882 to Archibald D. Snowden and Julia N. Snowden. Archie and Julia were married on April 14, 1881 in Estill County, Kentucky. Lula was the oldest of 11 children. She never married.
Miss Lula, as she was called, was an employee of the W.T.B. Williams and Son Bank in Irvine for over 40 years. She served as the Assistant Cashier for several years.
She was the treasurer of the Irvine Independent Schools Board of Trustees for 33 years.
Miss Lula was a partner with her sisters, Miss Bertha, who taught music and Miss Mayme, in the Snowden Shop. This lady’s clothing store was first located on Main Street in Irvine and later moved to their home on Broadway. They operated this shop for several years and carried dresses, big hats, jewelry, fine crystal and lots of hand made linens. This was the place to go for those special gifts for weddings and anniversaries.
The Snowden sisters loved to wear the things they sold. They were always dressed in pretty dresses and beautiful jewelry.
Miss Lula also served as the treasurer of the Irvine Methodist Church Sunday School for 42 years. A friend, Sara Noland said, “Lula and her sister, Mayme taught me how to keep the books. They were very careful and particular to have every thing accurate.” Lula was the dispersing officer for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in Estill County.
Lula Snowden died on November 30, 1969 after a long illness. She is buried in the Old Irvine Cemetery along with the rest of her family.
