Mamie West Scott
Mamie May West Scott was born July 5, 1896 in Estill County, Kentucky, the third of eight children born to James F. West and his second wife, Lucy Norton.
Mamie West received her AB degree from Martha Washington College, Abingdon, Virginia and her MA degree from the University of Kentucky. She did special work in education at Columbia University, New York City.
Mamie May West married Benjamin Harrison Scott, a lawyer, on June 20, 1922 at the age of 25. They soon built a brick home on the corner of Main and Rice Streets, where they resided until their deaths.
Mamie West Scott was the first and only female superintendent (to date) of the Estill County Schools, beginning about 1928. In the years to follow she held this position several terms, for a total of 24 years. This longevity is in itself is a major accomplishment, in addition to holding this leadership role as a woman at this time in history.
Mamie Scott was also a coordinator of student teachers at Eastern Kentucky University and conducted education workshops for teachers all over the state of Kentucky.
Scott, along with several others of the community, was instrumental in preserving the Granny Richardson Springs School. This one-room school was established in 1899 and closed at the end of the 1963-64 school year. The school was moved to the Eastern Kentucky University campus, where it was dedicated on July 1, 1976, in commemoration of the one-room school in Kentucky.
In August of 1978 Mamie and her husband Ben were involved in an automobile accident. Ben was killed and she was severely injured. Mamie died on February 2, 1979 of a heart attack.
She, along with her husband, made many lasting contributions to the community. She was very active in the Republican Party, civic affairs, the Irvine-Ravenna Woman's Club, and the Estill County Retired Teachers Association.
Mamie and Ben Scott were not blessed with children, but were instrumental in the education of many young people. They are buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Irvine.
