S. Glenn Marcum, M.D.
In 1980 the name of the hospital was changed to Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital to honor two of Estill County's most devoted and beloved doctors, Dr. Glenn Marcum and Dr. Virginia Wallace Lewis.
Due to the demands of being a skilled physician always on call, Dr. Marcum's time was so limited he could never belong to any of the various organizations in the county. He did belong to the Estill County Medical Assn., Kentucky State Medical Assn., American Medical Assn., and the Southern Medical Assn. To keep himself updated he took continuing medical courses at the University of Kentucky. He gave generously to worthwhile charities and to anyone in need.
To rest himself in mind and body, Dr. and Mrs. Marcum began to take two or three vacations trips a year. Sometimes these trips were combined with his profession.
In August of 1979 they attended a medical seminar in India. On the flight home on August 31st, Dr. Marcum became seriously ill. Nothing could be done for him and upon arrival in New York he was pronounced dead.
Estill Countians mourned his loss not only as a dedicated doctor, but also as a devoted friend. He was laid to rest in Oakdale Cemetery in Irvine.

Dr. Marcum was granted a medical license for the state of Kentucky in July 1935. License number, 8698; Registry number, 1046.
His privileges were: General practice, obstetrics, minor surgery.
By 1966 he had performed 8-10 surgeries by himself and a large number as an assistant. (This was on his application for staff member at Estill County. This was the number of operations he had done in his career to this point. After he injured his hand in the service, he was limited as to what he could do.)
